It's All in the Details

How pleasant and safe a given block is for walking, cycling or driving is determined by hundreds of design decisions. That's why our Director carefully examined the Route 9 Complete Streets drawings put forth by the NY State Department of Transportation.

Many of their proposals need fixing. We invested many weeks compiling a thorough set of recommendations. The most important result of this effort is a letter created in collaboration with Sleepy Hollow's Mayor, which was sent to the DOT: https://route9active.org/doc/route-9-complete-streets-feedback-sleepy-hollow-tpc-2024-12-03.pdf

Suggestions were also submitted to activists and officials in Tarrytown, Irvington, Dobbs Ferry and Hastings. Several comments have also been made by us directly to the consultant team and DOT.

We are doing everything in our power to get a protected mobility lane on Broadway. That will provide residents and visitors the safety needed to feel comfortable walking, cycling and using wheelchairs for local trips. The result will be a happier, healthier community while cutting our biggest carbon emissions source.

Superb Support

Speaking of letters, many thanks to the 73 people who sent emails to the State DOT as part of the Most Important Route 9 Action Ever. The consultants have made several improvements in the corridor, as shown at village stakeholder and steering committee meetings.

More Icing on the Cake?

We've been writing this newsletter for a couple weeks now, hoping to add some extra icing on top. But the accomplishments we want to reveal are taking longer than desired, and new issues keep popping up. The deadline for getting this out has arrived. So, we'll just have to say what we have right now is solid, wish everyone happy holidays, and make a toast for an amazing 2025.

We look forward to getting you that proverbial extra icing. Aw, heck, we'll also get you some REAL icing. Let's have some sort of party in January!

For now, do your part to keep us making the proverbial, and real, icing: https://biketarrytown.org/donate.php
