Broadway Bucks

You may have heard the excellent news. The State Department of Transportation won a $25m Federal grant for the Route 9 safety project in Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown (between Pierson Ave and Benedict Ave). The State will pitch in another $25m. We are working with both villages to lobby State and Federal officials to ensure NYSDOT implements the refinements necessary to make the project a success. We'll keep you posted.

$1,000 Ebike Rebates Still on the Table

Been wanting score an ebike, but the cost is freaking you out? Now you can save $1,000 when buying one! To qualify, you need to:

1. Live or work in the Project MOVER service area: (Sleepy Hollow, Tarrytown, Dobbs Ferry, Ossining, or Croton).
2. Are moderate or low income, as determined by either:
   1. household income (examples: 1 person <$80,150, 4 people <$114,450)
      or
   2. are on at least one public assistance programs

Persistence Pays Off

Breakthrough on Bumpy Bridge

Since 2022, Bike Tarrytown has been bugging the New York State Thruway Authority about the ever increasing bumps on the Tappan Zee Bridge's Shared Use Path. And it seems like we're finally making headway.

Between us sending a snail mail letter to each of the Thruway's Board members, and the Journal News interviewing the Authority for what became another unflattering front page story, the agency says it is "evaluating potential projects for long-term repairs."

(This problem arose because the paving company messed up when applying the "tack coat" between the concrete base and the asphalt on the entire northern bridge, including the motor vehicle lanes.)

Sleepy Hollow Speed Limits

In February 2024, we wrote to then Mayor Rutyna requesting the removal of the 40 mph sign from Statue Island because it no longer matched the local laws, which set a 30 mph limit on Broadway to Highland Ave. We also requested refinements to the 30 mph southbound signs at Highland Ave. The administration got the 40 mph sign taken down.

That May, the State DOT said it is OK to lower the speed limit to 25 mph on Broadway in Sleepy Hollow from Patriots Park to Bedford Rd, (extending the 25 mph zone from Tarrytown) and implementing a school speed zone on Bedford Rd. The DOT promptly installed the Beford Rd signs, but didn't change the ones on Broadway.

At that point, we wrote to then Mayor Rutyna asing the Village to get the 25 mph signs erected, and to implement our earlier request to improve the southbound signs. Nothing else happened, despite multiple subsequent messages.

Once Marjorie Hsu was elected as Sleepy Hollow's Mayor, we contacted them about this matter, plus asking the Village to adopt a new Local Law for the new speed limits. We are glad to report the Mayor Hsu got it done!

Some refinements are still needed, which we will request.

Thruway's Broadway Project Speed Signs

During the (nonsensical) widening of Broadway by the Thruway, we noticed the engineering drawings said to put in 35 mph signs heading southbound. That didn't reflect Tarrytown having lowered the limit to 30 mph after the drawings were made. The plans also lacked a speed limit sign for people coming off the Thruway who head north on Broadway.

We wrote to then Assistant Village Administrator Alissa Fasman, who had the Thruway Authority address the problems.
