Sun 4/14: Peabody Cleanup

Not our event, but a great thing to do. Help the Peabody Preserve crew get things ready for spring, 1 - 3 pm. Be prepared to get dirty, bring gloves and clippers if you've got em. More info: ppoc.outdoors@gmail.com

Mon 4/15: Block the Bike Ban

Tarrytown is proposing a sidewalk cycling ban and ruining road riding.

The public hearing continues on Monday. Stop this nonsense by speaking up either in person or via email.

Details have changed slightly since we last posted about this:

Mon 4/15: Bike Bucks @ Baseball

It's weird how many people drive to Devries Park. Cycling to it from the manors is super easy. And now that Edge-on-Hudson has opened the waterfront connection (see above), biking is beautiful from Tarrytown.

Well, nothing inspires people to break their habits like cold, hard cash!

So, kids who bike to TNT Baseball practice at Devries Park get a buck! One kid will get $20. (Rain date, 4/17.) Rules:

Tue 4/16: Get Your T-Shirts & Sweatshirts

Our gear is awesome, right? The headless cyclist on the front. "Fun, fast, fit, free, freedom" on the back. Printed with soft, water-based ink.

Standard T-shirt: Gildan "Ultra Cotton." Top quality, 100% cotton. Dan is a Medium. Galayna (4th grade) is a Youth Medium and Reed (1st grade) is growing into a Youth Small. $20.

Womens T-Shrit: American Apparel "Ladies' Fine Jersey Tee." 100% cotton. $20

Sweatshirt: Gildan "Heavy Blend" pullover hoodie, with pocket across the front. Dan tried a Small and said a Medium would be more comfortable.

For those who placed an order already, we'll reach out to confirm.

Want one, or need more? Send us an email by the end of 4/16.

Here's what they look like: https://twitter.com/BikeTarrytown/status/1116716476055064576

Tappan Zee Bridge

Our Director was extensively quoted in this article and video by the Journal News regarding the Tappan Zee Bridge's cycling / walking path.

A key part distills down to the following. When you have a transportation question, ask "What would Netherlands do?" They've been working on cycling for 40 years, and they don't rest. They're constantly iterating, making things better.

https://www.lohud.com/story/news/local/tappan-zee-bridge/2019/04/05/cuomo-bike-path-still-months-away/3270972002/

In another publication, one of our members wrote this excellent op-ed about why the TZB path needs to be open 24/7.

How to Make Great Streets

Speaking of "what would the Netherlands do?" Here's how they make their residential streets so safe, quiet and beautiful.

Reading this in-depth piece is an investment that will pay off.

7 Lakes Dr / Route 6 Bypass

Once the TZB path opens, Westchester's road cyclists will be able to enjoy the beauty of Harriman State Park without getting in their cars.

But there's a hitch. Access to the magnificent 7 Lakes Dr is broken by the Route 6 traffic circle, near Bear Mountain.

Colleagues in Rockland County created a petition. Sign it to help get this mess fixed:

Let's Ride

People are interested in doing social, awareness raising rides. If you're up for planning and leading them, drop us a line.

Ebike Update

Good news. The Governor's weird ebike "legalization" proposal (mentioned in earlier updates) was dropped in the final State budget.

Now to get them really legalized in NYS. Keep nudging your legislators. The New York Bicycling Coalition plans to take steps to move this agenda item forward.

Till then, don't forget to share our short, fun video about how ebikes ease hilly terrain: https://vimeo.com/322673563 We really appreciate Sean Roach and Dan Williams pulling this together.

Find Folks Who Need the TZB 24/7

Playing off the video and TZB stories, above, we need to make short, inspirational videos of people who will benefit from the Tappan Zee path being open all night long.

If you know people who fall into this category, please put them in touch with us. Examples: people who work night, late and early shifts in restaurants, hotels, offices, etc.

Join In

We were pleasantly surprised the other day to see that 90 people have made financial contributions to us over the past two years, totaling over $10,000.

Please, join (or renew your commitment to) the team that keeps our Director working (more than) full time making our villages better.
